Market Potential

Early cancer diagnosis

With tens of millions of newly diagnosed cancer patients every year worldwide, early diagnosis represents a large and currently poorly served, market. Cellmid’s technology promises to deliver a cost-effective blood test to detect many types of cancer early, presenting physicians with opportunities to intervene more effectively as a consequence.

Heart attack

Heart attack is the number one cause of death worldwide. In the US alone, more than 1.5 million people suffer a heart attack each year and 30% of them die as a result. Although most heart attack victims now survive the initial heart attack thanks to early angioplasty and stenting, many suffer heart failure in the aftermath. This is because the area of heart muscle starved of blood during the heart attack dies, and the heart muscle becomes irreparably damaged, leaving the heart permanently weakened. There is a vast, currently unmet, need for new compounds that prevent heart failure by reducing the damage inflicted by heart attack. Cellmid’s MK treatment aims to meet this need. An emergency dose of MK could be given to patients by coronary artery infusion via standard catheter as soon as possible after heart attack. MK may also be given in conjunction with current standard life-saving procedures such as clot-busting and stent technologies. Reducing heart damage due to heart attack would make midkine one of the first in a new class of drugs and attractive to health insurers and providers worldwide.

Inflammatory diseases

Chronic inflammation causes or contributes to many of the most prevalent diseases globally, including autoimmune disorders, organ damage and cancers. Controlling the inflammation that underlies such diseases is an effective way of managing them. However the most effective drugs currently used, steroids, cause serious side-effects, so cannot be used long term. Safe and effective anti-inflammatory compounds would therefore fulfil a massive unmet medical need. Cellmid is developing an antibody therapeutic to meet this need. Antibody drugs have proven safety profiles and are suitable for long term use.

Veterinary cancer diagnostics

Pet ownership, and the corresponding veterinary care, represents large and rapidly growing markets worldwide. 40% of pet dogs aged over 5 years old die of cancer and current diagnosis and treatment options are extremely limited. Cellmid is developing sensitive diagnostic products to meet this lucrative and unmet market need.
